Winter Roadside Prep Checklist for Chester County, PA Drivers

PA winters punish unprepared cars. A 15-minute checklist now beats a 2-hour roadside wait at 11pm in a snowstorm. Save 267-249-5891 in your phone first — then work through this list.

1. Battery

• Have it load-tested if it's 3+ years old (free at most parts stores).
• Clean any corrosion off the terminals.
• If it cranks slow on a 40°F morning, replace it before a 20°F morning kills it.
• If it dies anyway: mobile jump start or on-site battery replacement.

2. Tires

• Check tread with a quarter — if you can see the top of Washington's head, replace them.
• Check pressure when temps drop. Tires lose ~1 PSI for every 10°F drop.
• Confirm you have a usable spare (and the jack + lug wrench). Many newer cars don't.
• Locking lug nut key — find it now, not on the shoulder of Route 30.

3. Fluids

• Antifreeze tested to at least -20°F.
• Winter-blend washer fluid (the cheap blue stuff freezes).
• Fuel tank above ¼ to prevent fuel-line freeze and reduce out-of-gas risk. More on fuel delivery.

4. Emergency Kit (Keep in the Trunk)

• Phone charger + power bank
• Blanket, hat, gloves
• Flashlight + spare batteries
• Small shovel and bag of cat litter or sand (traction)
• Ice scraper + snow brush
• Reflective triangle or flares
• Water + a few granola bars

5. Know What Roadside Can (and Can't) Do

6. Drive Like It's Winter

• Double following distance on cold pavement.

7. If You Do Break Down
