It's a sinking feeling — you're standing next to your car, keys sitting right there on the seat, and the doors are locked. In a parking garage it feels even worse, because you're boxed in and you just want to get home. Before you do anything you'll regret, here's how to handle it.
If a child, vulnerable person, or pet is locked inside and may be in danger, call 911 immediately. Follow the emergency dispatcher's instructions rather than waiting for roadside assistance.
First, don't break a window
For an ordinary lockout, breaking glass can turn a frustrating situation into a repair bill and leave your car full of sharp shards. Ask about professional lockout assistance instead. Whether safe entry is possible depends on your vehicle; don't assume every car can be opened without risk.
Second, check every door and the trunk
It sounds obvious, but in the rush it's easy to assume everything's locked when one door isn't. Give each door and the trunk a quick try without forcing anything. Only use an accessible opening if you can reach the keys safely.
Third, try a spare key or your vehicle's app
If you've got a spare key or a phone app for your vehicle, now's the moment. Some vehicles support remote unlocking through an app that's already set up, depending on connectivity and any required subscription. Check your vehicle's instructions. A spare with a family member nearby can also save you a service call.
Tell dispatch where you are in the garage
Share the garage name, street address, level, and a nearby space number or landmark. Mention any entry gate, access restriction, or posted clearance limit so dispatch can confirm access before sending help. Stay in a safe, well-lit area away from moving traffic; garage staff or security may be able to help you identify your location.
When to call MR RESCUE
If none of that pans out, that's what we're for. MR RESCUE is a veteran-owned mobile roadside assistance company serving Chester County, Delaware County, and surrounding areas in southeastern Pennsylvania. We come to your location for vehicle lockout assistance. No AAA membership is needed.
Certain newer or luxury vehicles may not be eligible. Give dispatch your vehicle's year, make, and model so we can confirm whether we can help before dispatch. We will not force unsafe entry or promise damage-free access to every vehicle.
Call or text for a quote. Technician availability and arrival estimates depend on your location and current job load; confirm them with dispatch before service.
